Co-Designing Healthier Climate Policies

New Study to Support Development of Healthier Victorian Climate Policies

January 2024

Climate change is affecting the health of individuals and communities worldwide. Accordingly, policymakers are developing policies that have implications for climate resilience or emissions reduction. We understand such policies to be policies or programs that may have been specifically designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or adapt to climate change, as well as policies that may have been designed for other purposes, but which may have emissions reduction or adaptation benefits. Examples include policies relating to active transport, renewable energy, and planning.

Such policies can also influence health, but we have limited knowledge on how policymakers currently consider health when they develop these policies.

To address this knowledge gap, a project funded by VicHealth will collaborate with a cohort of Victorian state and local policymakers to understand current approaches to considering health in policy development, and where needed, will co-design tools and resources to support policymakers to develop healthier policies.

The research collaboration, comprising University of Melbourne, the Department of Health - Victoria, and the Western Alliance for Greenhouse Action, is currently recruiting Victorian state and local government policymakers within and beyond the health sector to participate in the project.

If you are involved in state or local policy-making and are interested in participating in this project, please contact Dr Annabelle Workman (workmana@unimelb.edu.au) for further information.
