Why we collect your personal information

The purpose of this survey is for the University of Melbourne to learn more about our students and their University experience. Information you provide in response to this survey will be collected and processed to help improve student services, course content and delivery, and better shape the student experience overall.

The 'processing' of personal information refers to all activities relating to the management of your personal information, from its collection and use, through to its storage and disposal, and everything in between.

How we process your personal information

Your participation is voluntary, and the processing of your personal information is based on your consent. Your contribution to improving and shaping the future of the University’s student experience is greatly valued.

You have been sent a unique survey link so that your survey responses can be analysed in our secure data management system in conjunction with information previously collected from you, such as your gender, age, citizenship, and course details. This helps us to better understand the diversity of student experience. Access to your survey information in the data management system is strictly limited to authorised data analytics professionals within the University Decision Support (UDS) division.

Survey response data will only be reported in a de-identified and/or aggregate format to ensure individuals cannot be identified from the data. Your responses will not be held or recorded on your student record, and it will not be shared at an individual level with faculty staff or University administrators. Your de-identified information may also be used for general business analysis, quality assurance, reporting and planning activities.

We retain your response data for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this notice. You may request that your response data be deleted at any time. Response data will generally be deleted within 30 days of a deletion request or in compliance with the University’s retention and disposal authority.

Your rights

You may request access to, or correction of, your personal information we hold, or exercise your individual rights as applicable under relevant privacy laws, unless this would have an unreasonable impact on the privacy of others or would contravene the University’s other legislative obligations.

If the lawful collection of your personal information is based on your consent, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. However, this will not affect the lawfulness of our processing of your information prior to you withdrawing your consent.
