Mobilising mentoring with alumni support
Traditional mentoring has always helped students and professionals thrive in their careers, and now, a new approach to mentoring is having an even greater impact. The University of Melbourne’s Ask Alumni – established in 2018 – is a flash mentoring program that facilitates short, one-off conversations to help students and alumni achieve their career goals.
Where traditional mentoring would set up one exclusive, long-term mentoring relationship, with Ask Alumni, mentees can request a one-off meeting with a mentor – and reach out to as many potential mentors as they’d like.
I felt I could relate to Martin because he and I did the same degree, and he was an international student as well. He told me nothing would be a bad experience; all you would do was filter out career choices you don’t like. Kiran, Ask Alumni mentee.
The power of volunteering
Meet participants of Ask Alumni – mentee, Anthony and mentor, Marilou – to hear their experience of the mentoring program.
The highlight of the program is waking up one day and finding the email of the mentee saying ‘I got the job’. Dr Marilou Barrios, Ask Alumni mentor.
