Co-creating media to uplift the student experience

Professor Robert Hassan discusses how globalisation relates to a simple trip to Standing Room cafe on Parkville Campus.

What we made, and who we collaborated with.

Subject expert: Professor Robert Hassan, Culture and Communication, Faculty of Arts

Video and Media collaborated with Professor Hassan's to uplift his ‘Perspectives in Global Media Cultures’ subject with 6 x 8-minute videos and coaching to empower the teaching team to continue making their own videos.

Professor Robert Hassan approached us having already self-recorded several independent video projects. With this experience under his belt, he was seeking assistance to take the DIY content he made for his capstone subject - Perspectives in Global Media Communication - to a new level.

To begin with, we facilitated a number of discovery sessions with Professor Hassan to identify the key learning outcomes of the project and how the budget could be best used. A plan was agreed upon for the Video and Media team to focus on delivering six high-quality videos, as well as provide bespoke coaching so that the academic team could leverage their technical skills for future projects.

In the first stages of production, scripts were drafted by our team of accomplished screenwriters, who translated the subject expertise into engaging media, selecting accompanying visuals to elevate and complement the dialogue rather than simply reiterate it.

Meanwhile, in addition to the knowledge gleaned during the filming process, Professor Hassan and his team also received sound and image-quality upskilling through our coaching offering. His team was thus empowered to create a cohesive suite of media resources that complemented the professionally-recorded videos.

This hybrid model of professional production alongside coaching had some great benefits. The Video and Media team was able to collaborate with Professor Hassan to uplift ‘Perspectives in Global Media Cultures’ as a whole subject, without exceeding the project budget.

Additionally, Professor Hassan and his team positioned themselves as innovators in teaching and learning within their faculty by enhancing their media literacy and production skills.

Subject feedback from Hanchi (international student)

"Thanks for your special, delicate and very informative lectures! I have to say, these documentary-like videos are the most different lectures I’ve seen since I entered the University."
