Open Classrooms
The University of Melbourne is proud to launch Open Classrooms, a pilot initiative of the Office of the Provost, in collaboration with Teaching and Learning Innovation and Faculties. This initiative provides academic staff with the unique opportunity to explore real LMS subjects from a student’s perspective, gaining fresh insights into teaching practices across disciplines.
What is 'Open Classrooms'?
Open Classrooms fosters a collaborative learning environment where best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment are shared, explored, and celebrated. By stepping into the student's view of LMS subjects, staff can reflect on course design, compare approaches, and apply new ideas to their own teaching.
Three diverse subjects, showcasing distinct pedagogical approaches are being used for the launch:
- Animal Behaviour (ZOOL30006) – focuses on assessment for learning, active learning strategies, and scaffolded skill development.
- Music, Mind & Wellbeing (MUSI20225) – emphasises inquiry-based learning, active and collaborative learning, and assessment for learning.
- Management Competencies (MGMT90140) – explores experiential learning, critical analysis, and evidence-based decision-making.
More subjects will be added over time, expanding opportunities for staff to engage with innovative course designs.
How does it work?
You can self-enrol in a subject, browse freely, or follow the guided review activities.
The LMS subject review activity offers flexible, self-contained activities that allow staff to engage at their own pace.
Why participate?
- Gain fresh perspectives by experiencing course design from a student’s point of view
- Discover new strategies that align with the University’s Framework for Educational Excellence (FEE)
- Compare teaching approaches across faculties and disciplines
- Apply innovative ideas to refine your own subject design.
This is a chance to step into the shoes of your students, engage with inspiring teaching practices, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement in learning and teaching.
