Security monitoring: privacy notice
Why we collect your personal information
The University of Melbourne (University) is collecting and processing your personal information to:
- Ensure the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, and property;
- Monitor and analyse use and demand for our premises, services, or facilities; and
- Assist in the detection and investigation of any actual or suspected unlawful or antisocial behaviour or breaches of University statutes, regulations, terms and conditions, policies, rules, or guidelines (‘University Rules’).
The “processing" of personal information refers to all activities relating to the management of your personal information, from its collection and use, through to its storage and disposal, and everything in between.
The following personal information will be collected:
- Video images and/or audio of you collected by Security Safety System (eg CCTV) footage. This footage may be subject to analytic review tools that allow accelerated searching and filtering of relevant footage by object type (eg clothing, bags, vehicles, building or environmental features, equipment, signs, or prohibited items (such as weapons) that can be identified algorithmically using patterns or descriptors).
- Video images and/or audio of you collected by body-worn cameras and mobile devices used by Security personnel. These may be used when Security responds to an incident and a verbal notification will be provided at the point these devices are activated.
- Information about your physical location collected by the technology underlying the access control system (which generates records of access).
By entering any University campus, land, or building owned or managed by the University, you acknowledge that your personal information may be collected, used, and disclosed as described in this notice. If we do not collect this information, we will not be able to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, and property.
How we process your personal information
We will process your personal information as necessary for our legitimate interests, in accordance with applicable privacy laws, and only under the following circumstances:
- for the purpose for which it was collected; or
- a related purpose which you might reasonably expect; or
- where you have consented to the processing; or
- if we are required or permitted to do so by law.
The security footage collected is stored securely and access is limited to authorised University personnel, including:
- campus security staff and security contractors providing services to the University, and
- University staff (including contractors providing services to the University) to the extent necessary to investigate any actual or suspected unlawful or antisocial behaviour or breaches of University Rules.
We may share your personal information with:
- law enforcement agencies to support an investigation of suspected unlawful activity, or
- other government authorities where required or authorised by law.
A government authority may also share personal information the University provides to it with another authority where authorised or required by law.
We will store, retain and/or destroy your personal information in compliance with the University’s retention and disposal authority.
