University of Melbourne publishes second Annual Report on Racism 

Today, the University of Melbourne publishes its 2025 Annual Report on Racism.

The Report outlines the University’s anti-racism priorities, progress since the launch of its Anti-Racism Commitment in 2023 and complaints and reports of racism submitted by students and staff in 2025.

Importantly, it also gives visibility to reported racism at the University, the processes by which student or staff misconduct is investigated and the penalties which apply when University policies are breached.

In 2025, 80 complaints related to racism were received by the University - 40 complaints related to staff, 20 complaints related to students and 20 complaints related to structural or systemic issues.

The Report acknowledges that incidents of racism are under-reported through formal channels, as evidenced by data collected through internal surveys and the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) Report on Racism. The Report outlines actions to address barriers to formal reporting, and improve awareness, confidence and trust in its processes.

“The University recognises the destructive impact of racism on individuals and the damage it causes our community and our institution,” said Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane Gunn AO.

“In speaking with students and staff with lived experience of racism at the University, the importance of transparent reporting and visible accountability for our anti-racism commitments and actions has become more apparent than ever.

“I encourage anyone who has experienced racism in our community to seek support or make a report, and I sincerely thank those who have done so.”

For students and staff who have experienced or witnessed racism at the University, support is available through the University’s Safer Community Program, Counselling and Psychological Services, faith-based support and (for staff) the Employee Assistance Program.

These services can also provide support to students or staff who may find this report distressing. Behaviour or materials that cause concern can be reported to University Security or the Safer Community Program.
