Students are returning to the University of Melbourne campuses today for Melbourne Orientation after almost two years of remote learning, teaching and working.

University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor, Professor Duncan Maskell, said the University was ready to welcome students back to enjoy the campus experience that has been sorely missed.

“After an absence of nearly two years, it’s wonderful to see our campuses come alive with the return of students for Orientation Week,” Professor Maskell said. “The University hasn’t been the same without our students, so it’s great to see them once again enjoying the festival-like atmosphere on campus today.”

“Melbourne Orientation is a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved in our vibrant university life, connect with others and start to feel at home on campus.”

The week kicks off with the Discover UniMelb program of face-to-face activities and events that will continue throughout Semester One, as well as more than 250 events as part of Melbourne Orientation.

The University of Melbourne continues to ensure a safe and health campus environment for everyone to enjoy. This includes publishing the latest information about our safety measures on a dedicated COVID-19 website, which now features updated content on returning to campus.

“The University has a lot of support measures in place to help new and returning students transition back to campus safely,” Professor Maskell said. “The health, safety and wellbeing of our community is of the utmost importance.”

The University of Melbourne has approximately 21,000 international students enrolled who come from all parts of the world.

“International students are part of the integral fabric of our university community, and we feel privileged that these talented students choose Melbourne to come and study,” Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Michael Wesley said.

“The benefits they bring not just to the University but also to the city of Melbourne itself are immeasurable.”

Semester One begins on Monday 28 February, with the majority of coursework being offered on campus. Many on-campus subjects will have online options available for students who are unable to return to campus.
