Accelerating our transition to a virtual campus

Virtual campus

In response to the decision of the National Cabinet and the Victorian Government to implement Stage 1 of a shutdown of non-essential activity, the University is accelerating its transition to a ‘virtual campus’ model.  This will enable the University to continue to deliver high-quality education for our students and undertake critical research activities.

This means:

  • All teaching, learning, assessment and examinations will be paused from midnight Monday 23 March, for technical reasons, to allow us to transition fully to the launch of the virtual campus on Monday 30 March.
  • We have asked students not to attend campus from midnight, Tuesday 24 March and, wherever possible, for staff to work from home.
  • We will continue to undertake selected priority research, such as the COVID-19 research across the University with the Doherty Institute, which is of international importance.
  • We will also maintain other select categories of campus-based research that are priority activities on grounds of exceptional importance and long-term impacts, where they can be managed safely and responsibly within the precautionary parameters commensurate with other essential services.
  • We are continuing to work with students and accommodation providers to devise arrangements for continuity of support for our students.

The University will be maintaining essential services to support online teaching, critical research activities, key business functions, essential buildings and grounds maintenance, and IT and security services.

During this time, most buildings will have restricted access as we move to a minimum operating model for our physical campus.

The health, safety and wellbeing of our campus community is of the utmost importance.  Accordingly, the University will ensure students who remain in campus-based accommodation, together with essential staff members who need to access the campus, continue to feel secure, protected and connected to our community during these changes to our physical operations.
