Internships

MDAP provides opportunities for Masters students to join our internship program for subject credit each semester. Interns engage with our team of Research Data Specialists and collaborators to work on research projects across a range of domains.

What interning at MDAP looks like

Interns work on real-world research projects and collaborations with our research data specialists. Interns bring intellectual value and novel ways of working to our projects.

We provide

  • An MDAP supervisor/mentor to help guide your work and plan activities that you will undertake on research projects
  • Access to shared desk space in Melbourne Connect and the necessary software and tools to complete your work
  • Ongoing guidance and support to you and your supervisors
  • Regular upskilling and knowledge sharing sessions to hear from experts and build your skills and capabilities
  • Opportunities to attend seminars, panels and other events, with opportunities for networking
  • Where possible and relevant, opportunities to present and/or publish your work

What internships involve

  • A kick-off orientation to meet your peers, introduce yourself and meet your MDAP intern cohort
  • You join a research project(s) and form part of the team, and be able to apply your skills and learning on real-world research
  • Regular intern meetings to share experiences and hear from guest speakers
  • Opportunities to present your work to the wider MDAP team and build your communication and presentation skills
  • Development of a final report with a summary of your internship experience and the work you did with us, which can form part of your portfolio

Like interning with Avengers

MDAP kicked off its internship program with four Master of Data Science students jumping onto real-world research problems with our research data specialist. Interns Maria, Rohit, Pratibha and Saket slotted seamlessly into the team, bringing intellectual value to our projects, and a good dose of fun. Here, the intern team share their reflections with us.

When assessing applicants, we highly value an interest, enthusiasm, and curiosity in solving problems through research, data, and computing. We also seek interns who have a keenness to learn new things in a collaborative environment.
