Insights from Our Past Intern: Hear Their Story!

James is an ex-MDAP intern, he holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Nanyang Technological University and a Master of Information Technology from the University of Melbourne. Outside of work, you'll find him dominating the table tennis or pickleball courts, or diving into the world of electronics and PC builds.

What did you learn during your internship with MDAP?

One of the most valuable lessons I took away was the importance of adapting my communication style based on the audience. When speaking with technical supervisors, I could confidently use technical terms and abbreviations.

However, when addressing non-technical stakeholders, I realised the need to simplify complex information without losing essential details. This experience taught me how to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical worlds, ensuring clarity and understanding on all sides.

What was the best part of being an intern?

The best part of being an intern was the perfect blend of professionalism and freedom.

Working within a team gave me a sense of belonging , there was room to dive into technical domains and refine my skills without any constant pressure.

The supportive environment at MDAP was truly exceptional  - my supervisors and colleagues were not only approachable but also provided  invaluable feedback that helped me grow both personally and professionally.

What are you doing now? Are you applying the skills you learned during the internship in your new role?

Currently, I am a Software Developer at the Research Hub for Language in Forensic Evidence. It's been incredibly rewarding to apply the skills I honed during my time at MDAP directly to my current role. The knowledge and experience I gained has been essential in navigating the challenges of my position.

Would you recommend a MDAP internship to others?

Absolutely! While I may not be a salesperson, I can wholeheartedly say that:

If you're looking for a workplace with a supportive culture, plenty of learning opportunities, and colleagues who truly care about your growth, MDAP is the place to be.

The chance to work in a research-oriented environment is unique, and to top it off, the Melbourne Connect office offers a stunning view of the city! It's an experience you don't want to miss.
