Be the inbox hero we need and WIN!
Can you spot a scam? A phishing simulation is coming in September. Report it for your chance to win an Apple Watch!

Last month we shon a spotlight on Scam Awareness Week. To help everyone across the University stay one step ahead of scammers, we’ll be refreshing your memory on ways to spot and report a phishing email, so the Cybersecurity team can stop the scammers in their tracks.
Cybercriminals are becoming more bolder and more sophisticated in their attempts to attack organisations around the world – including universities. One of the most common ways they strike is through social engineering, most commonly via phishing emails.
While some phishing attempts are easy to spot, others can be surprisingly convincing, with subject lines and sender details designed to slip past our defences. But falling for one can have serious consequences.
Throughout September, we’ll be running a phishing simulation across the University. A fake (but very realistic) phishing email will land in the inboxes of all staff and students. With the goal of seeing how cyber safe we all are, and to check whether our cybersecurity awareness messages are hitting the mark.
Your chance to win!
All you have to do is keep an eye out for a suspicious looking email and report it using the new “Report phishing email” button in our University inbox in Outlook.
If you don’t have the button, you can forward the email to spam-report@unimelb.edu.au.
Winners will be chosen and notified on Wednesday, 1 October – the perfect way to kick off Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

Why we run phishing simulations
Just like a fire drill prepares you for an emergency, phishing simulations give us a chance to practise spotting scam emails in a safe, controlled way. They help us understand what tricks scammers are using, what training messages are working (or not), and how we can keep improving our defences.
Why reporting matters
Deleting a suspicious email protects you, but reporting it helps protect the whole University. Every report helps our Cybersecurity team respond faster, track what’s going around, and reduce risk across the University.
What to look out for
We’ll share more tips during Scam Awareness Week (Monday 25 August to Friday, 29 August), but for now you can brush up on some common scams on our Scam advice page, and keep up to date of the latest scams doing the rounds on our Scam alert page.
Keep an eye out, and good luck!
