Your alumni community is an incredible resource to guide you through every stage of your career journey. Whether you’re seeking tailored career guidance, exploring new opportunities, or simply wanting insight from someone who’s been there before, one-off conversations and ongoing mentoring can help put you on the right path. Our alumni-to-alumni mentoring programs help you develop new skills and navigate professional challenges while gaining industry specific career support.

How to find a mentor

Find all the information you need to join the Ask Alumni platform and understand how it works.

  • Our platform, complete with an intuitive matching algorithm and integrated booking system, allows you to connect with mentors quickly and easily. You can view alumni who are recommended to you based on your profile, or you can personalise your own search to find more a more specific selection of alumni.

    Once you have found your match, initiating a one-to-one meeting is as easy as clicking the request meeting button on their profile and sending them a message. Meetings can be held over the phone, online or face to face – it's up to both parties to decide what will work best for your conversation.
  • Ask Alumni is exclusive to University of Melbourne students and alumni aged 18 years and over.

    Students are automatically accepted into the program upon joining using their University of Melbourne credentials.

    Alumni participants are accepted into the program once program administrators confirm they are University of Melbourne alumni, as defined by the University.
    1. Join Ask Alumni with your personal email address – you can join at any time.
    2. Complete the registration form with your basic details and profile information – this helps you find the right match for your next career conversation.
    3. Once accepted, login to the platform to set your availability and other preferences – you can decide how to make the platform work best for you!
    4. Start browsing alumni profiles right away and find your perfect match.
  • Alumni can benefit from connecting with multiple mentors through the platform and learning from a range of perspectives. With Ask Alumni, you can reach out to as many potential mentors as you would like to best guide your career decisions.
  • Ask Alumni is an international platform, allowing you to connect with fellow professionals in your local region or anywhere around the world.
  • Your name, employment history, areas of expertise and location can be viewed by those who sign up to the program to help them decide who they'd like to connect with.

    Program administrators have full access to your profile information and activities within the program for the purposes of delivering the Ask Alumni program.
  • Once accepted, alumni are given both mentee and mentor access within the Ask Alumni platform which allows you to:
    • Connect with other alumni for career insights and expand your professional network; and/or
    • Make a difference by empowering the next generation of student and alumni leaders

    You can adjust your settings to take charge of how many connections you are willing to accept. You can set them to connect with as many or as few mentees as you like.
  • The information you provide on Chronus – our third-party provider that houses the Ask Alumni platform – is stored in their offshore cloud. You can find more information about how your data is used and stored by Chronus in their Privacy Policy and by the University in the UOM Mentoring Terms and Conditions.

  • Mentoring is a supportive relationship where an experienced graduate shares knowledge, skills and guidance to help another person grow personally and professionally.

  • The University of Melbourne offers a range of mentoring opportunities – from career-focused programs to industry-specific and peer mentoring. Each program connects alumni to students or alumni to alumni in ways that best suit their goals and interests.

  • Commitments vary by program, but most involve a series of meetings or conversations over a set period. Clear guidelines are provided so both mentors and mentees know what to expect and can make the most of the experience.
