How starting the Perth alumni network enriched Neville’s life and career

Thanks to the initiative of alum Neville Lin, University of Melbourne alumni based in Western Australia now have a new opportunity to forge fresh connections.

Lin’s career has taken him from China to Melbourne, Brisbane and now Perth, where he is a partner at SEER Financial Group. After arriving in Western Australia without knowing many people, he saw an opportunity to bring like-minded alumni together, and started the Perth Alumni Network.

“We have more than 4300 alumni in Perth, but we’re quite far away from Melbourne,” Neville explains.

“I thought, why not create our own opportunity to connect? The University of Melbourne provided us with a really strong foundation for academic excellence and community. I saw this network as an opportunity to build on that legacy.”

In addition to 11 formal Alumni Associations, the University of Melbourne supports a number of smaller alumni networks that help keep alumni connected around the world. Led by volunteers giving back to the university community, the alumni networks can be grouped by location, faculty or discipline.

In November 2023, Neville decided to “test the water” and launch the Perth Alumni Network with a debut networking event. Not thinking that many people would show up, he booked a venue for 30 people. Over 60 alumni showed up. He plans to now host quarterly events.

“There is a lot of interest in our events from the community, which is great to see. We’ve also started a LinkedIn group that people can join.”

Why “learning to fish” is important

Born and raised in China, Neville chose to study at the University of Melbourne for his postgraduate degree because he “wanted to study at the best university”. He had always had an interest in maths and numbers, and enrolled in the Master of Applied Commerce because it promised an interesting career path.

“I became an auditor because I love seeing the story behind the numbers,” he says. “You learn about different organisations and that makes it really interesting work.”

While studying he found that the University “really cares about international students,” he says. “And as a top university, you meet smart students and it’s quite a good community.”

The course’s practical nature was also attractive. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence and the world of work changing, he says the degree offered by University of Melbourne always catches up with recent trends and focuses on equipping students with the tools required to learn on the job, and embrace lifelong learning, was also vital in setting him up for professional success.

“The university doesn’t just give you a fish - it teaches you how to fish. I think that’s really helpful, particularly now.”

After he graduated he joined KPMG and from there, Neville has developed experience working throughout the audit and assurance field, with over 16 years devoted to elevating financial transparency and integrity within diverse sectors.

His employers have ranged from big four accounting practices to mid-tier firms - which he notes has given him broad exposure to the different approaches to an auditing career. In 2024, he joined SEER Financial Group as a partner.

“I really wanted those different experiences, to see what it was like and where I wanted to take my career,” he explains.

Giving back and upskilling through volunteering

Reflecting on his experience as a volunteer leader of the Perth Alumni Network, Neville says he has made friends, met people from different backgrounds and shared ideas with like-minded alumni. He has also developed leadership skills that will help him further in his professional life.

He notes the Perth Alumni Network welcomes all kinds of alumni - from those looking for professional opportunities to alumni wanting new friends. “Anybody who is interested in attending an alumni event should be relaxed and know that everybody is friendly and welcoming,” he says.

“We can create meaningful connections, enable continuous learning and enrich our professional and personal lives. That’s my vision for this network.”
