University of Melbourne appoints next Chancellor

Mr Myers, widely recognised as one of Australia’s preeminent barristers, graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1969. An accomplished businessman and noted philanthropist, he has been the Chair of the Board for Believe – the Campaign for the University of Melbourne since its commencement in 2013.

Mr Myers said “I am honoured to become Chancellor of the University with which I have had more than 50 years association.”

“The University of Melbourne is one of the most important institutions of our country, and I will do my best to serve it as Chancellor.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis acknowledged more than a decade of dedicated service to Council by Elizabeth Alexander AM, including six years as Chancellor.

"Ms Alexander brought to her chancellorship a lifetime of experience as a senior corporate adviser and board chair, leadership in the accountancy profession and a deep knowledge of institutional finances.  In her time as Chancellor the University has achieved strong financial performance and been able to invest in students, research and improved facilities. As Chancellor, she has been committed to supporting the next generation of students."

Professor Davis noted the support Chancellor Alexander provided to him and the leadership team at the University.  He expressed thanks for her advice and encouragement during the many years they worked together.

"Ms Alexander has been selfless in her contribution to the University of Melbourne.  This community has benefited greatly from her care and commitment."
