The Narrm Scholarship Program

Elevating excellence from everywhere

Now, more than ever, we need university graduates who are drawn from every walk of life, to lead towards a more equitable, sustainable and prosperous world.

We are committed to finding these future trailblazers – wherever they are in the community – and building bridges of opportunity for them to enrol at the University of Melbourne.

In order to achieve this, the University has launched the most comprehensive scholarship program offered to undergraduate students in Australia: the Narrm Scholarship Program.

The Narrm Scholarship Program enables us to reach out to high-achieving secondary school students across the nation who, traditionally, may not have felt supported to apply for a place at the University of Melbourne.

Narrm is the Woi Wurrung word for the Melbourne region, meaning ‘place’. The Narrm Scholarships name was chosen to reflect the significance of place, belonging and connection in students’ university experience, while honouring Indigenous knowledge, practices and cultural heritage.

Narrm Scholarships will be available to domestic undergraduate students enrolling through the University’s special entry access scheme, Access Melbourne. Narrm scholarships are guaranteed to all Indigenous Australian students, and to students from identified low socioeconomic areas.

The Scholarships will provide a living allowance and tailored enrichment program designed to build the student’s sense of belonging and connection with their peers. In addition, the University will guarantee relocation allowances to all eligible Narrm Scholars from regional or remote areas of Australia.

The University will welcome the inaugural Narrm Scholars in 2024. By 2030 our objective is to double the numbers of underrepresented students in identified categories from the current 10 per cent to 25 per cent of the domestic undergraduate student body.

Supporting over 1,700 of the best and brightest commencing students from underrepresented backgrounds at the University each year – a number that will grow to a total enrolled cohort of over 4,800 students annually by 2030 – will require collective investment of over $60 million per year.

This is one of the most significant ongoing investments in future graduates we will ever make, as a university and as a community. Achieving the full scale of our unprecedented goal will only be possible in partnership with generous, forward-thinking donors.
