John Beder (he/him)
Master of Film and Television
John is an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker, now studying a Master of Film and Television focused on the narrative form. His documentaries tackle resistance, social justice, medicine and substance use. The New York Times, PBS and Al Jazeera have published his work, and it has screened at more than a dozen Oscar-qualifying film festivals.
His latest film, How to Sue the Klan, won an NAACP Image Award. It follows five Black women who brought down a local Klan chapter through a landmark civil suit. He also directed the Emmy-nominated Dying in Your Mother's Arms, about paediatric palliative care, a co-production with The New York Times.
A single film once moved John to go vegan for sustainability, a change he kept for ten years. As a Wattle Fellow, he wants to turn that power towards climate action.
Outside of filmmaking, he enjoys rock climbing and is a classically trained musician.
