Piloting critical and purposeful GenAI use in assessment
Explore, trial and evaluate assessment approaches that support students to engage with GenAI critically and purposefully, with implementation commencing in Semester 1, 2027.
Why this pilot?
Generative AI (GenAI) creates opportunities to support learning within assessment, but effective use requires purposeful assessment design and opportunities for students to develop critical judgement about when and how these tools are used.
The pilot will support teaching teams to design and implement assessment approaches that create opportunities for students to engage with GenAI critically and purposefully, including making informed decisions about when and how to use GenAI and applying disciplinary knowledge and judgement.
Approaches might involve, for example, using GenAI to support formative feedback or questioning, asking students to critically evaluate GenAI outputs, or designing stages of an assessment where GenAI use has a defined educational purpose.
It will explore how GenAI use is designed and communicated within assessment, how students interpret and engage with it in practice, and what teaching teams learn through implementation. Insights from participating subjects will inform practical examples, case studies and design considerations for future assessment practice.
What will participants do?
- Work with the project team to co-design or refine a GenAI-supported assessment approach.
- Implement the approach in 2027.
- Reflect on implementation, including what worked well and what required adaptation.
- Participate in agreed evaluation activities, such as providing feedback and reflections on the pilot, subject to relevant ethics and data governance requirements.
What support will you receive?
Participating teams will receive practical co-design support from Teaching and Learning Innovation to develop or refine their assessment approach, plan for implementation and evaluation, and work through relevant GenAI design and guidance considerations.
