University of Melbourne celebrates excellence in journalism at Melbourne Press Club’s Quill Awards

The University of Melbourne joined the Melbourne Press Club to celebrate the 31st Quill Awards for Excellence in Victorian Journalism on Friday 20 March.

As principal partner of the Melbourne Press Club, the University of Melbourne was strongly represented at the Quills, with students and academics from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and the Centre for Advancing Journalism (within the Faculty of Arts), attending the awards.

Interim Provost Professor Jane Gunn AO presented the Gold Quill to Herald Sun medical editor Robyn Riley for her story “Mum gives birth to wrong baby” .

In her speech, Professor Gunn reflected on the shared mission of universities and journalism.

“Our partnership is a celebration of the media’s vital role in a healthy democracy,” Professor Gunn said.

“By standing together, we strengthen our collective commitment to freedom of expression.”

The University sponsored the award for Excellence in Science, Medical and Health reporting. Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Interim Dean Professor Mike McGuckin presented the award to ABC News journalists Rachel Carbonell, Loretta Florance and Ninah Kopel for the story “Zinc sunscreen concerns”.

University of Melbourne journalism student Morgan Reinwald received a highly commended award in the 2025 Student Journalist of the year category, and PhD researcher Cory Alpert was highly commended in the Keith Dunstan Quill for Commentary category.
