The University of Melbourne has released the third edition of its Melbourne Enterprise Review, showcasing the University's latest achievements in research translation, commercialisation, entrepreneurship and industry partnerships.

The Review highlights the growing momentum of the University's innovation ecosystem, featuring metrics and impact stories that demonstrate the University's leadership in fostering successful startups, spinouts and collaborative ventures.

This year's Review features more than 15 innovation stories, ranging from University-affiliated ventures developing minimally invasive neurotechnology for conditions including paralysis, epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease, to a new startup helping the construction industry measure and reduce its environmental impact. It showcases a community program equipping sports clubs with tools to recognise and respond to racism and a strategic partnership supporting research innovation, infrastructure and precinct development.

The key ecosystem milestones for 2025 include:

  • 3042 active research contracts with partner organisations
  • $1.4 million awarded in Proof-of-Concept funding
  • 172 invention disclosures received
  • 13 new University of Melbourne startups established
  • 18 new companies added to the University and University-affiliated funds' venture portfolio
  • Over $350 million raised by portfolio companies.

University of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Mark Cassidy AM said the Review reflects the University's deep commitment to translating world-class research into enduring benefit for society.

"The University's new research strategy, Advancing Research 2030: Excellence for Impact, makes research translation and commercialisation a core pillar of our ambitions," Professor Cassidy said.

"The stories and achievements featured in this year's Review demonstrate what is possible when researchers, industry partners, investors and communities work together. We are building an ecosystem that supports innovators at every stage – from early discovery through to commercialisation – and the results speak to the strength of those collaborations and the quality of the research underpinning them."

Melbourne Enterprise Vice-President Ken Jefferd said the Review captures the breadth and depth of innovation activity across the University's ecosystem.

"From our precincts and programs to our funding vehicles and industry partnerships, we are creating the conditions for great ideas to become great ventures," Mr Jefferd said.

"The launch of the Melbourne Entrepreneurial Centre's MEC 2030 strategy marks an important step forward – with an ambition to support 24,000 innovators and build 250 new ventures by 2030. Major strategic partnerships announced this year reflect the University's growing appeal as a partner of choice for leading global organisations.

“Alongside that, the University's Genesis Pre-Seed Fund approved its 21st investment in just 32 months of operations, and Tin Alley Ventures committed $12.9 million to eight startups. The pipeline is strong and continues to grow.”

Melbourne Enterprise Review 2025 is now available online.
