Melbourne Orientation unveils Campus Canteen
A record 14,000 new students registered for over 200 Orientation activities at the University of Melbourne this week, creating a festive atmosphere and immersive campus experience before classes start on Monday.
The week featured signature Melbourne Commencement Celebrations, peer mentor group meetups, live performances, sports and student services expos, and a chance for students to explore the 200+ student clubs and societies at the Student Union (UMSU)’s Summerfest.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Emma Johnston took part in Orientation activities on Thursday, joining a Melbourne Commencement Celebration, UMSU’s Summerfest and visiting the new Campus Canteen with special guest Barry the Bear.
“Starting university is a big moment and Orientation Week is all about making the first days on campus exciting and welcoming,” Professor Johnston said.
“We have had record numbers this week and it’s been fantastic to see our new students enjoying themselves, connecting with each other and embracing campus life.
“Meeting so many of our new students, learning about their journey here and their aspirations, has been the highlight of my week. I never cease to be inspired by their stories.
“It’s also critically important we support our students in every way we can, so they can fully experience the best of what the University of Melbourne offers. The Campus Canteen is a key part of this, ensuring our students have a place to meet over good, healthy food in a relaxing atmosphere.”

Co-created with students, Campus Canteen is a new University initiative to help address the cost-of-living and food affordability pressures faced by students. Students can buy fresh, healthy $5 meals from breakfast to dinner at a newly opened Campus Canteen on Grattan St at the Parkville campus.
The University will use the new venue as a pilot project and will open the Southbank campus Canteen later this year.
“We’ve heard from students that food affordability is a very significant issue for them,” said University of Melbourne Provost, Professor Nicola Phillips. “I am delighted to see the Parkville canteen opening in time for the 2025 academic year, to be followed by the Southbank canteen in the near future.
“It means our students have healthy and nutritious options, at an affordable price, while they are spending time on campus going to class, studying, attending events or meeting their friends.
“Students have been a significant part of the work that has gone into creating this space. It’s these kinds of places, where students come together, that make a community. It is a vital part of the student experience.”

The refurbished space, which is a few steps from the iconic Prince Alfred Hotel, reflects the University’s long history of shared dining over the years and features repurposed furniture from around campus and a nod to Union House, home to the University's cafeteria from 1911 to the 1990s.
Meals will supplied by local provider Carlton Providores, who have a 10-year history of delighting student residents of Wilam Hall (previously Medley Hall) with their offerings.
