Former Lord Mayor of Melbourne Sally Capp AO has been appointed a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Melbourne.

Ms Capp will undertake a program of work across the Faculty of Business and Economics, and the wider University community over the next two years.

Announcing Ms Capp’s Fellowship, University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Professor Duncan Maskell said:

“Sally made an enormous contribution to our community during the six years that she served as Lord Mayor.

“Sally was an outstanding leader who always maintained a strong advocacy for the people and the many unique elements that make Melbourne one of the world’s great cities. This was never more evident than during the global pandemic when Sally steered Melbourne through some of its darkest times.

“Sally has also combined a long and successful business career with her involvement in several charities and not-for-profit organisations. Her experience and acumen will provide a boost to the Faculty of Business and Economics and the University.”

Commenting on her appointment Ms Capp said:

“I am delighted to be appointed a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Melbourne. I am looking forward to making a positive contribution to the Faculty of Business and Economics and the University over the next two years.”

The Vice-Chancellor's Fellow program provides distinguished leaders with access to a scholarly environment and the opportunity to make a distinctive contribution to the University and the wider community.

Ms Capp has commenced her Fellowship at the University.

About Sally Capp

Sally Capp was re-elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne in October 2020 – having previously been elected in May 2018 – and is the first woman to be directly elected as Lord Mayor. Sally resigned as Lord Mayor in June 2024.

In 2023, Sally was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in the King’s Birthday Honours for distinguished service to the people of Melbourne, to local government, to business, and to the community through various organisations. She was also named the McKinnon Emerging Political Leader of the Year in 2019.

Sally was the first woman to hold the post of Agent-General for Victoria in the UK, Europe and Israel. She has also served as the CEO for the Committee for Melbourne and Victorian Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia. A passionate Collingwood Football Club supporter, Sally made history in 2004 as the club’s first female board member.

Sally began her career as a solicitor, after completing Law (Hons) and Commerce degrees at the University of Melbourne. She has held senior roles at both KPMG and ANZ, and co- founded a small business, which she took to the ASX. She is involved in several charities, currently sitting on the board of the Olivia Newton- John Cancer Research Institute, the Mary Jane Lewis Scholarship Foundation and on the Melbourne University Business and Economics Board.
