New Dean of Science appointed

Professor Moira O'Bryan has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Science.

The University of Melbourne has appointed Professor Moira O’Bryan as Dean of the Faculty of Science.

Professor O’Bryan has been Head of the School of Biological Sciences within the Faculty of Science at Monash University for three and a half years.

Prior to this role, she was the Deputy Director of Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, and Program Lead for the ‘Development and Stem Cells program’ within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, also at Monash.

Professor O’Bryan is a developmental biologist and reproductive biologist, and a noted national and international researcher on male reproductive health. She is the current President of the Society for Reproductive Biology (Australia and New Zealand).

Professor O’Bryan joins the University of Melbourne as an engaged scholar with a passion for creating mentorship opportunities for staff and students along with improving diversity and inclusion across disciplines.

University of Melbourne Vice Chancellor Duncan Maskell congratulated Professor O’Bryan on her appointment.

“Professor O’Bryan has published and taught extensively and has a substantial track record in the promotion of science, the development of frontier-forging research platforms and collaborating across disciplines and sectors,” Professor Maskell said.

"Im very excited to welcome Professor O’Bryan to the University and I’m looking forward to her contribution to the Faculty of Science and the wider University community. I would also like to thank and pay tribute to Professor Aleks Owczarek for his outstanding work and commitment over a lengthy period as interim Dean, leading up to this appointment.”

Professor O’Bryan will commence as Dean in December.
