University statement on Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert

KMG

The University of Melbourne remains deeply concerned about the detention and treatment of its academic Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert, who is being held in prison in Iran.

Vice-Chancellor Duncan Maskell said: “The news that Dr Moore-Gilbert has been moved from Evin to Qarchak Prison is worrying and deeply distressing to her family, friends and her University colleagues. The safety and welfare of our colleague continues to be our absolute priority and we hope she can remain strong and healthy.

“We are in close contact with Dr Moore-Gilbert’s family and will continue to provide the ongoing support and assistance they need during this extremely distressing time.”

Professor Maskell said the University is also in close contact with the Federal Government and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and is pleased the Government continues to do all in its power to secure Dr Moore-Gilbert’s safe release. He said the University is grateful that Dr Moore-Gilbert has had telephone contact with her family and consular officials in recent months and hopes that will continue.

The University will not be providing any further comment at this time.
