New student accommodation opens in the heart of Carlton
A new 648-bed student accommodation for University of Melbourne students has been officially opened in the heart of the University’s campus precinct this morning.
Student Village, the University of Melbourne Campus (the Village), located in Leicester Street, Carlton, is a University-led project built in partnership with Campus Living Villages (CLV).
In operation since January, the Village already boasts 100 per cent occupancy and was officially opened by University of Melbourne Chancellor Elizabeth Alexander and CLV Chairman Walter Carpenter.
University of Melbourne Vice-Principal of Policy and Projects Julie Wells said the project is the latest demonstration of the University’s commitment to increase student accommodation options near its campuses.
"We know that finding affordable, quality accommodation close to campus is a high priority for many of our students, especially for those who are new to Melbourne," Dr Wells said.
“This partnership with CLV is an important contribution to our goal of providing 6000 quality, affiliated student accommodation places by 2020, and is a good complement to the existing college accommodation available to our students.
"We are very glad to see this facility open to our students."
Dr Wells said the five green star-rated building also highlighted the University’s commitment to environmentally sustainable best-practice and reducing its environmental footprint.
The building has solar panels, a 20 000-litre water recycling facility, rooftop gardens and a thermal chimney that helps to naturally ventilate the buildings corridors.
“The Village welcomed its first students on 1 January 2016, and in a few short months has already developed a vibrant community of residents who are looking to make the most out of their student experience,” Mr Carpenter said.
“Facilities such as a heated swimming pool, student lounge, fully equipped gym, half-court basketball zone, BBQ area and study rooms on each level encourage a balanced lifestyle that helps students live, learn and grow throughout their time at university. We are very proud to celebrate our partnership with the University of Melbourne with the opening of this quality facility,” he said.
