Foundational reading

  • The Little Red Yellow Black Book Online

    For a general introduction to Indigenous issues in Australia, such as for students who are new to the country or exploring this topic for the first time The Little Red Yellow Black Website (and accompanying book) is an invaluable guide.

  • Engaging with Traditional owners

    The First Peoples – State Relations (FPSR) Group (formerly Aboriginal Victoria) provides guidance on how to respectfully engage with Traditional owners.

  • Using culturally appropriate and respectful language

    A style manual on using culturally appropriate and respectful language when writing with, for or about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. A reference supplied by the Australian Government.

    This helpful guide by AIATSIS assists in identifying traditional owners wherever you may be in Australia.

  • Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners

    Determine who the formally recognised Traditional Owners are for an area within Victoria. Includes links to Traditional Owners groups provided. A reference provided by First Peoples State Relations.

  • Map of Indigenous Australia

    The AIATSIS Map of Australia attempts to represent the language, social or nation groups of Australia's First Nations. Note that this map was created in 1996 using published sources available up to 1994.
