Indigenous cultural protocols
The development of respectful relationships between institutions such as the University of Melbourne and the First Peoples of this country is an important step in the broader social movement towards reparations for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Respect can be manifested in a number of ways but can be demonstrated more formally through the recognition of Indigenous Cultural Protocols.
At the University of Melbourne, Indigenous cultural protocols observed or encountered during any normal business day may include:
- Welcome to Country
- Acknowledgement of Country
- Smoking ceremony
- Sorry Business
- Cultural content warnings
- Addressing Elders appropriately
Our staff are provided with additional guidance to enable a sound understanding of these protocols and how to approach them appropriately.
