Maximise your impact with corporate matched giving

Matched giving is a simple way to boost your contribution to the University and amplify your impact on students, researchers and the broader community. Whether you’ve organised a fundraiser or given directly, a matched donation from your employer can multiply your contribution. Plus, matched donations can incentivise friends and family to contribute to your cause and provide an opportunity for your workplace to do good in its community.

What is matched giving?

Matched giving is a type of philanthropy where companies financially match donations that their employees make to nonprofit organisations.

After you’ve made your donation to the University, your workplace will then contribute their own donation of the same amount.

Benefits of corporate matched giving

Matched giving at the University has benefits for all involved – the University community, the donors and the employer.

  • More donations are likely to be received through fundraising – 84% of donors say they’re more likely to donate if their contribution is matched.
  • Donors feel good about the fact that their donation will double in size and impact.
  • The University will receive twice the amount of funding – whether it be for student support, lifechanging research or another area of impact.
  • It’s a simple way for employers to have a positive influence on their immediate and broader community.
  • It can boost a company’s perceived social responsibility which can lead to new opportunities, greater staff retention and other benefits.

How to approach your employer

To enquire about matched giving in your company, schedule a meeting or write an email to your Human Resources team.

Make sure to include details of why you are passionate about giving to the University of Melbourne and provide details of how the funds will be used. If you’re planning to fundraise, make sure you ask your employer about matched giving beforehand. If they agree, this will allow you to promote the fact that each donor’s gift will go twice as far.
