Supporting our international students

It was recently announced that the Federal and State Government have approved an International Student Arrivals Plan, with arrivals expected to commence from late December 2021. We are very excited to welcome them back.

International students and alumni are an integral part of our University community and contribute to the diverse and vibrant campus life that we all remember.

Over 18,000 students have been studying at the University while living offshore and we recognise that many of them have faced significant challenges. The University has increased its support for students in 2022, helping them to realise their ambitions through a range of scholarships and support programs.

This includes the $10,000 merit-based Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarships and Melbourne Graduate Scholarships for new and high-achieving international students in selected programs, wherever they are in the world. There are also one-off $5,000 Melbourne Graduate Scholarships available to support current undergraduate students wishing to enrol in a broad range of graduate coursework programs, as well as a new one-off $4,000 grant and a special welcome pack to support new and current international students arriving in or returning to Australia. This package has been designed to help ease the burden of international travel costs and assist students in getting settled in and connected with our local community.

Students at study hub

Offshore students can also study and connect with the University community at a Study Hub, with University of Melbourne Study Hubs and Study Melbourne Hubs, established by the Victorian Government, now open. This includes our new facilities in Shenzhen and Nanjing in China. Vice Chancellor Professor Duncan Maskell and University leaders had a virtual meeting with students and staff from the Shenzhen Study Hub recently (pictured from L-R: Samantha Bi – Hub Operations Administrator, Yifan (Owen) Mo, Zihang (Emma) Nie, Bojing Zhang – Hub Operations Manager).

We also continue to offer many online opportunities and services to offshore students, ensuring they can engage in an inclusive study environment and access support, no matter where they are. This includes partnering with Workplace Options to launch a free, confidential, short-term counselling service to our students who are located outside of Australia. The service will also be able to connect our offshore students to local resources to help them manage emotional, practical or physical needs. This service is free, confidential, available in English and some local languages and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
