Making every move count

Thanks to a community of more than 850 donors, Narrm Scholars like Mobin can pursue their ambitions in the clasroom through chemistry and on the world stage – towards Olympic gold.

Only three weeks after signing up for a wrestling academy, Mobin was offered an unexpected opportunity: to compete at a national competition.

“It was 2023 and I was in Year 10. My coach called to say he had a spare seat in his car and encouraged me to come to Adelaide with the team,” he says. “I’d joined the academy for Jiu-Jitsu, which I’d been doing since I was 13, but I thought I’d have a go.”

Mobin surprised everyone – including himself – when he made it to the finals.

“I was against a guy who had been wrestling for a long time. In wrestling, if you’re down ten points to zero, you’re out. At the end of the first period, I was down nine to zero. Somehow I came back and won, 12 to 11. I won the nationals! And after that, I was all in.”

Since then, Mobin has continued to excel in the sport, winning seven national titles and representing Australia at the 2024 U17 World Championships.

A pathway to opportunity

Today, Mobin is studying a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Chemistry. Receiving a Narrm Scholarship alongside his offer gave him the confidence and support to pursue his studies, while continuing to train and compete at the highest levels.

After facing some unexpected and challenging circumstances during his secondary school studies, Mobin appreciated the recognition of the barriers he had overcome, but also his potential to succeed.

When I got the scholarship, it was… honestly, it was a relief.

Since 2024, more than 850 donors have helped support 2,439 scholars through the Narrm Scholarship Program.

Mobin is one of 2,439 students whose university journeys have been supported through the Narrm Scholarship Program. Since the inaugural cohort was awarded in 2024, more than 850 donors have contributed to Narrm Scholarships, helping students from underrepresented backgrounds overcome barriers to education through financial assistance and enrichment opportunities. Together, these contributions are strengthening a diverse and inclusive undergraduate community.

For Mobin, the scholarship eased the financial pressure of university and allowed him to focus on building his future beyond the wrestling mat.

“I’ve always loved chemistry,” he reflects. “I also like to get into the fine detail, argue different points of view, and work out new solutions.”

Mobin hopes to combine his scientific knowledge with his passion for problem-solving through a Juris Doctor at the Melbourne Law School with plans to pursue a career in patent law.

Balancing his ambitions

Mobin continues to balance his university studies with the demands of elite wrestling. Through the University’s Elite Athlete Program, he has access to tailored support, including flexible study arrangements, assistance with competition and travel costs, and on-campus sporting facilities.

Together, the Narrm Scholarship and Elite Athlete Program have given Mobin the support and confidence to pursue his ambitions on and off the mat.

His training schedule requires focus, discipline and commitment, with preparation often involving multiple sessions each day.

Alongside his studies and training, Mobin works part time as a coach to further fund his sporting commitments, including competitions and training camps.

“My parents are not able to cover that sort of cost,” says Mobin. “Corporate sponsorship is not really a thing in wrestling.”

Looking ahead, Mobin has his sights set on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“I am going for gold,” he says.

While wrestling remains a major part of his life, Mobin is equally excited about the challenges ahead in law.

“I’m someone who loves a challenge that will keep me engaged and focused. On the wrestling mat, you have to be 100 per cent present. I look forward to bringing this skill to my career in law.”

Whether on the wrestling mat, in the laboratory or eventually in the courtroom, Mobin is determined to apply the curiosity, discipline and resilience that have shaped his journey so far.

“Because of the scholarship, I could really give it a proper go. If I didn’t have the scholarship, I’d have to stop uni or find another way. I’m honestly so grateful to everyone who supported me and gave me this opportunity.”
