The Victorian Indigenous Engineering Winter School (VIEWS) is changing the face of engineering by empowering Indigenous high school students to see themselves as the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.

Run in partnership between the University of Melbourne, Monash University, Swinburne University and RMIT University, the seven-day immersive program gives Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 10 to 12 a first-hand look at university life, careers in engineering and tech, and the real-world impact of these professions.

VIEWS enables students from across Australia to explore hands-on workshops, meet Indigenous professionals and engage with industry leaders. It enjoys support from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, Worley, Boeing, Google, SIEMENS and SYPAQ.

“VIEWS gave me a window into what it’s like to be an engineer and the different skills engineers use,” says Joshua Van Bockel, a Taungurung man of the Kulin nation, who attended VIEWS in 2017 and went on to become a Master of Mechatronics Engineering student at the University of Melbourne.

“One of the biggest barriers for Indigenous students entering the tech and STEM space is the lack of experience and information, which is why the VIEWS program is so valuable.”

“Through VIEWS, you get an inside point of view of the industry.”

VIEWS was born out of the 2015 National Indigenous Engineering Summit to tackle the under-representation of Indigenous people in STEM. A decade into its launch, the program continues to inspire aspiring engineers.

Michelle Bellino, Head of Student Experience in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, says that the program was a “powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we come together with a shared purpose”.

“This is what is unique about VIEWS,” she says.

The spirit of collaboration, learning and innovation … defines the VIEWS program.
