Changing the face of Australian politics
Pathways to Politics for Women celebrates a decade of driving gender equality in political leadership.
Ten years ago, the face of Australian politics looked very different. Women held fewer than 37 per cent of seats in Federal Parliament and just 31 per cent of local government councillor positions. The corridors of power remained dominated by men, and too many talented women saw politics as a place they didn't belong.
Carol Schwartz AO refused to accept that reality. In 2013, frustrated by the glaring absence of women in Australia's political leadership, she transformed concern into action.
Together with the Trawalla Foundation, Women's Leadership Institute Australia and founding university partner, the University of Melbourne, she helped create Pathways to Politics for Women, launching the inaugural program in 2016. Through practical training, mentoring and career-long support, the non-partisan program equips diverse women with the confidence, networks and practical skills to pursue public office.
What began in Victoria soon became a national movement. Today, through partnerships with eight universities – the University of Melbourne, QUT, UNSW, Charles Darwin University, Adelaide University, the University of Canberra, the University of Western Australia and the University of Tasmania – Pathways to Politics has supported hundreds of women to step forward as political leaders.
The results speak for themselves. Since 2016, alumni have celebrated 97 electoral successes – and counting – across the political spectrum and at every level of government. Seven alumni now serve in the Victorian Parliament representing five different political parties, demonstrating the program's cross-partisan impact.
Today, Australia has achieved gender parity in Federal Parliament – progress made possible by many forces, including the women who found their political pathway through the program.
As the late Dr Katie Allen, the first Pathways alum elected to Federal Parliament, reflected, "You can't be what you can't see. That's why the Pathways to Politics program is so important."
Ten years on, the program continues to build momentum. As Carol Schwartz reflects, "Pathways to Politics is genuinely changing the face of Australian politics. And we're only just getting started."
