Building futures for engineers
John Norman Mann (BE CivEng 1948), enjoyed his robust education at the University of Melbourne and appreciated the way it set him up for a fulfilling career.
John worked as an engineer throughout Victoria, including with the State Water Supply Commission, and in state government.
He left a gift in his Will to establish scholarships for students in civil or environmental engineering. As a scholarship recipient himself, he was keen to pay the opportunity forward. Since its inception in 2020, the Mann Scholarship has supported 12 students and continues to offer valuable opportunities for young engineers who aspire to have significant impact on the community.
For Master of Environmental Engineering student Thomas, receiving the Mann Scholarship in 2024 alleviated financial pressures, enabling him to reduce his working hours and spend more time at university. As a result, he was able to engage deeply with the course content, participate more actively in class, and immerse himself more fully in university life – building strong connections with teachers and peers and achieving stronger academic results.
“One of my main goals is to gain some relevant work experience so that I can learn more about industry roles within environmental engineering. I'm very interested in exploring work in sustainability and decarbonisation.
In the past, unpaid internships and industry networking events hadn't been possible for me as I needed income to pay for rent and living expenses. But thanks to this scholarship I am able to pursue these opportunities, which will open up a lot of doors for my future. I feel even more motivated to work hard and get the most out of the degree after receiving this scholarship."
I'm inspired to try and contribute to meaningful work in Australia like John did.
Lance Mann, John’s nephew, sees the impact of his uncle’s generosity through the students who receive the scholarship. He reflects on his uncle’s life and wishes:
“John was himself a scholarship student and felt that his time at the University of Melbourne enabled the rich and full life that he and his wife Bette enjoyed. He wanted that same opportunity to be available for students in similar situations to his."
"He always said that the scholarship he received shaped his entire life. He would have been very proud to know that he is now helping these students.”
John’s wish to support future students is now being realised; the Mann Scholarship is enabling students to focus more on their studies, gain industry experience and pursue work that benefits the community – a legacy that will keep opening doors for future generations.
