The Narrm Scholarship Program enables us to support high-achieving students across the country whose dream of studying at the University of Melbourne may feel out of reach. Narrm is the Woi Wurrung word for the Melbourne region, meaning ‘place’. The Narrm Scholarship Program name was chosen to reflect the significance of place, belonging and connection in a student’s university experience, while honouring Indigenous knowledge, practices and cultural heritage.

How does the Narrm Scholarship Program work?

Narrm Scholars receive wrap-around support through the program to assist with living and study expenses, accommodation, and their sense of confidence and belonging. Our Narrm Scholars receive:

  • A generous annual living allowance for each year of undergraduate study, up to four years.
  • Annual accommodation support at University-affiliated housing for students relocating to Melbourne.
  • A one-off relocation allowance for students coming from a regional or remote area of Australia.
  • A tailored enrichment program to support transition to university, success throughout studies, and career readiness by the time of graduation.

The Narrm Scholarship Program enables us to reach out to high-achieving secondary school students across the nation who, traditionally, may not have felt supported to apply for a place at the University of Melbourne. To be considered for the program, students must fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • Students who are experiencing financial disadvantage
  • Students from regional and remote areas
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students

Narrm Scholarships are guaranteed to all Indigenous Australian students, and to students from identified low socioeconomic areas.

Students don’t need to complete a complex application process to receive this support. Domestic undergraduate students enrolling through the University’s special entry access scheme, Access Melbourne, will automatically be considered for the program.

By eliminating the need for students to directly apply for the support, every student facing disadvantage will have an equal opportunity to receive the Narrm Scholarship Program.

We aim to double the number of domestic undergraduate students from three priority cohorts (students experiencing financial disadvantage, students from regional and remote areas, and Indigenous students) by 2030.
