Biography

Ash Alam is Senior Lecturer in Social Planning at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. The primary focus of his research is culturally and racially diverse migrants’ politics of housing and belongingness in destination urban environments in both the global south and north. His ongoing research includes a) the migrant retention capacities of small cities, and b) migrant housing mobilities and community building efforts outside established ethnoburbs. He is the New Zealand lead for the SSHRC of Canada funded project, Beyond the Metropolis: Immigration to small and mid-sized cities in comparative perspective.
