About Ian

Ian Wang is a graduate student in the Decision, Risk, and Financial Sciences program at the University of Melbourne, which he joined in 2025. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Finance at the university, conducting his thesis research within this Centre. Prior to commencing his PhD, Ian worked at AustralianSuper for two and a half years, as well as roles in Fintech, strategic consulting, and commercial banking over the years.
Ian’s work represents a shift from the application of financial models to a foundational inquiry into the human mind. His current research interest is in understanding the intricate processes of decision-making as they relate to consciousness, integrating insights from cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience. He is fundamentally driven by questions about how we perceive, process, and act upon the world to forge our choices.
Beyond his academic inquiries, Ian is an avid designer and player of board games. He is also a passionate history enthusiast, fascinated by the grand sweep of geopolitics and war.
