Trusts at the University

Describing gifts

Regardless of the type of gift, a donor must always specify the purpose of the gift, which should preferably be described in broad terms.

Does the donor intend to specify that the University must use the gift for the University's general purposes or for educational purposes?

The general purposes of the University include the educational purposes of the University (research, learning and teaching, knowledge transfer) and the ancillary functions of the University (construction and maintenance of the University buildings and grounds).

Does the donor intend to establish a trust to fund in perpetuity a specified purpose, such as bursaries, scholarships, prizes or research?

A gift to the University must be described carefully and precisely, to state clearly the purpose of the gift, namely the benefit the donor wishes to confer.
