Medieval and Renaissance Ensemble

The Medieval and Renaissance Ensemble present a selection of works from the 14th century French manuscript, Le Roman de Fauvel. Here lies a monumental satirical poem which describes the rise of a foolish horse, Fauvel, to prominence in the French court during the reign of Philippe le Bel. It is a vision of a world gone mad. The horse represents all that is wrong with the corruption happening in the French court and the church. The letters of the horse's name represent all the human vices; Flattery, Avarice, Vileness, Envy and Laxity. The eventual marriage of Fauvel to Vainglory continues to highlight the chaos in the French court with the offspring of this union potentially bringing about the end of the world.
