In 16th century Europe, the two-keyed, one-piece predecessor of the Baroque bassoon, otherwise known as the bass dulcian or curtal (‘fagotto’ in Italian), experienced a remarkable period in the musical limelight. A careful selection of some of the first sonatas ever written for the instrument will demonstrate the extraordinary level of rhythmic virtuosity and technical dexterity possessed by performers and composers in Italy, Spain and Germany.

Bass dulcians: Lyndon Watts and Brock Imison
Chamber organ and harpsichord: Donald Nicolson
