Supporting people with disability into employment requires specialist knowledge, skills and capabilities. While leading staff with specialist knowledge requires a detailed understanding of the processes and conditions necessary to allow this to happen.
The Core Elements course is the first of two parts of the Customised Employment Support suite. This online course equips you with foundational knowledge of Customised Employment and the process of Discovery, which are evidence-based approaches helping people with a disability secure employment reflecting their ideal employment conditions, skills and career aspirations.
Taught by experts from the University of Melbourne and the Centre for Disability Employment Research and Practice, this program is the only offering of its kind in Australia.
What you will learn
Delivered online through live seminars, pre-recorded lectures and self-paced readings, videos and activities, you will explore foundational and leadership aspects and application of Customised Employment and Discovery, developed for the Australian disability sector context.
Topics include the origins and evidence of Customised Employment, implementing the Discovery process, informational interviewing and work experience. The course involves peer learning and feedback, self reflection and a work-based assessment in which you will apply your learning from the course.
Upon completion of Part 1 you will have an understanding of the basic elements of Customised Employment and Discovery and the conditions needed to support employment staff to utilise these practices, with a focus on activities related to understanding the client's objectives. Completing the full program will equip you with a deeper understanding of these methodologies and the advanced practical and leadership skills to implement them and ensure staff can utilise the approach with fidelity to practice.
Service providers operating within the NDIS space will need to ensure employment supports are delivered consistently and with fidelity to the process to ensure compliance with NDIS standards.
Who should apply?
This course is for experienced disability support workers who want to upskill to provide customised employment support and leaders wishing to support staff utilise this method successfully. It is particularly suited to mid-level and above managers who supervise disability employment consultants.
To be eligible, you must be actively working in the disability sector. This includes social work, allied health, disability service provision, careers and employment consultancy, placement consultancy, disability employment sales.
The program comprises two short courses delivered sequentially :
- Customised Employment Part 1 – The Core Elements, and
- Customised Employment Part 2 – Advanced skills.
You can take Part 1 as a stand-alone course or go on to take Part 2 to gain deeper knowledge and skills. You must successfully complete the introductory course before taking Part 2.
