Guided by leading practitioners from the University of Melbourne’s School of Computing and Information Systems, you will examine our current economic and social environments. You will explore how information technologies are strategically deployed to support business activities, and consider new and emerging organisational structures.
As part of your assessment, you will produce an Information Systems Strategy that responds to a particular technological disruption and could have real-world application to your own professional context.

Who will you learn from?
This Melbourne MicroCert is led by Dr Rod Dilnutt, an Industry Fellow of the School of Computing and Information Systems (CIS). He has been a practising consultant to industry over his thirty-year career. Rod incorporates his industry knowledge into the design and delivery of this Melbourne MicroCert. In video content, you will also hear from other leading industry practitioners who will valuable share insights based on their practice.
This Melbourne MicroCert is delivered over four weeks, with one pre-teaching week, two weeks of teaching, and one week for assessment.
You will undertake an estimated 42 hours of learning, which includes eight hours guided online learning, 12-14 hours of independent study and 20-22 hours spent on assessment tasks.
- Information Systems Strategy: develop a strategic response to a disruptive technology of your choice, ideally drawn from your own professional context (100%).
Upon completion, you will be awarded your Strategy in a Disruptive Environment Melbourne MicroCert. This digital certificate will include information and evidence of your developed and actionable skills, knowledge and capabilities (as outlined in the learning outcomes). It may also include artefacts (such as videos and written material) related to both experiential and work-integrated learning, including translatable assessment that is practical to your professional life.

Learning tasks have been designed to go beyond theory and enable you to apply your newfound practical skills and assessment task outcomes to your own professional context.

Strategy in a Disruptive Environment is also designed to provide a pathway – otherwise known as advanced standing – into the Master of Information Systems or Master of IT Management Executive.
To use Strategy in a Disruptive Environment in this way, you will need to complete all four Melbourne MicroCerts in the Leveraging Organisational Data series, as each one is equivalent to one quarter of a standard subject, and then apply for credit towards either degree.
Expiry of Melbourne MicroCert
This Melbourne MicroCert will expire five years from the date of issue as particular knowledge and/or skills may become outdated or need to be refreshed.
To undertake this Melbourne MicroCert, you must have:
- An undergraduate degree in an any discipline, and five years of experience in IT-related work
- At least eight years of experience in IT-related work.
