This Melbourne MicroCert focuses on managing data integration and quality from a strategic perspective.

Guided by leading practitioners from the University of Melbourne’s School of Computing and Information Systems, you will explore the mechanics of sourcing, moving and preparing data for data stores, and learn how to define, obtain and manage quality data.

You will also explore the role of data governance, critical success factors in managing quality data and strategic considerations for organisations.

Who will you learn from?

Dr Sean Maynard is based in the School of Computing and Information Systems. Over his career, he has gained significant teaching and research experience in the information security management and business analytics domains. His interests in information security management include: policy, culture, strategy, governance, risk, incident response and training, along with how analytics can be utilised in these areas. His research has been published in high-impact journals such as Decision Sciences, Computers & Security and the International Journal of Information Management.


This MicroCert is taught over four weeks (with two weeks of learning followed by two weeks for assessment). The total time commitment is 42 hours, consisting of approximately eight hours guided online learning, 13 hours self-guided study, and 21 hours for assessment tasks.

Assessment: develop a data strategy (100%).

You will develop a data strategy for an organisation (real or made-up) that briefs staff in the progressive use of the organisation’s data for analytics. Assessment breakdown:

  • Conceptual understanding and relevance (60%)
  • Structure and presentation (20%)
  • Evidence of research and citation (20%).

Digital certificate

Upon completion, you will be awarded your Strategic Data Management Melbourne MicroCert. This digital certificate will warrant the achievement of knowledge, skills and capabilities outlined in the learning outcomes. It may also include artefacts (such as videos and written material) related to both experiential and work-integrated learning, including translatable assessment that is practical to your professional life.

Strategic Data Management is designed to provide a pathway – otherwise known as advanced standing – to into the Master of Information Systems or Master of IT Management Executive.

To use it in this way, you will need to complete all four Melbourne MicroCerts in the Leveraging Organisational Data series, as each MicroCert is equivalent to one quarter of a standard subject, then apply for credit towards the qualification.

Expiry of Melbourne MicroCert

Strategic Data Management will expire five years from the date of issue due to the changing nature of the technology landscape.

Eligibility requirements

To take this MicroCert it is recommended you have:

  • An undergraduate degree in an any discipline and two years’ documented experience in IT-related work


  • At least five years’ documented experience in IT-related work.

You are encouraged to complete Strategic Data in Organisations prior to undertaking this MicroCert, but this is not a formal prerequisite.


If you’re aged between 45–70, employed or recently unemployed (less than 9 months) and not receiving Australian Government employment assistance, you could be eligible for Skills Checkpoint for Older Workers. Skills Checkpoint is an Australian Government funded service that allows eligible individuals to access personalised support programs including one-on-one support with a career advisor.
