This Melbourne MicroCert will provide you with the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to draft commercial contracts.

Under the guidance of seasoned legal experts from the Melbourne Law School, you will explore drafting techniques and best practices across a broad range of transactions. You will test your ability to identify potential drafting issues and receive indispensable feedback on your work.

You will also hear from a range of guest industry professionals to underline the diverse perspectives of stakeholders such as clients, solicitors and in-house counsel.

This Melbourne MicroCert is for professionals (legal and otherwise) looking to gain the skills and knowledge to draft effective commercials contracts. It is ideally suited to those who have relevant legal or contract administration experience of at least one year.

Learning experience

Throughout this Melbourne MicroCert, you will learn alongside other professionals in our innovative online learning environment.

You will undertake guided learning activities such as peer learning and interaction through online discussion boards, as well as synchronous discussions or interactive seminars via video conferencing. Crucially, you will put your skills into practice and get expert feedback from your instructor.

Who will you learn from?

Contracting Drafting Skills is led by Associate Professor Andrew Godwin. A former partner of an international law firm, he has over a decade of experience in the area of contract drafting training and has trained lawyers in Australia, Asia and Europe. He is also the author of a critically acclaimed bilingual book that examines Chinese and English legal terminology and concepts: China Lexicon.


This Melbourne MicroCert is delivered over 4 weeks (2 hours contact study and 10 hours self/peer study per week) + 1 week for assessment.

Assessment includes:

  • Issue-spotting exercise (30%)
  • Simulated drafting exercise (70%).

Digital certificate

Upon completion, you will be awarded your Contract Drafting Skills Melbourne MicroCert. This digital certificate will include information and evidence of your developed and actionable skills, knowledge and capabilities (as outlined in the learning outcomes). It may also include artefacts (such as videos and written material) related to both experiential and work-integrated learning, including translatable assessment that is practical to your professional life.

Contract Drafting Skills has been designed in close consultation with industry and is based on extensive experience in the design and delivery of training to industry. Throughout this Melbourne MicroCert, you will gain insights from a diverse range of industry professionals.

Content has been designed to adhere to Plain English rules and clear drafting principles as recognised in various contexts, including legislative drafting, disclosure requirements, and effective contract drafting guides produced by professional bodies.

Pathways to further study

Contract Drafting Skills can be taken as a stand-alone Melbourne MicroCert, or you can complement it with any other Melbourne MicroCert in the Contract Drafting Suite. It is normally undertaken as the first Melbourne MicroCert in this suite.

Expiry of Melbourne MicroCert

This Melbourne MicroCert does not have a set expiry date.

Desirable knowledge and experience

Relevant legal or contract administration experience of at least one year.


If you’re aged between 45–70, employed or recently unemployed (less than 9 months) and not receiving Australian Government employment assistance, you could be eligible for Skills Checkpoint for Older Workers. Skills Checkpoint is an Australian Government funded service that allows eligible individuals to access personalised support programs including one-on-one support with a career advisor.
