Tribute messages

As we mourn the passing of Emma with great sadness, we also take this moment to reflect on a life that touched so many. This Condolence Book is a place to share memories or reflections of Emma’s life and legacy.

You may wish to recall a moment that stayed with you, a lesson Emma shared, or a quality you most admired.

Each message is a tribute to Emma’s extraordinary impact and will be shared with her family as a lasting expression of the respect, gratitude and affection she inspired in so many.

My heartfelt condolences to Emma's family. In 2017 as Dean of Science, Emma presented me with a UNSW Alumni Award and during the dinner she was seated with my family who still recall her graciousness and generosity. Emma extended her welcome to all and inspired us to reach higher.

From our early days working together on Ubique, the Uni High School newspaper, and your time on UHS SRC it was obvious that you would go far. I am sorry that we did not have more opportunities to catch up in recent times, but thank you for your contributions and may you rest in peace.

As one describes, the quiet cruelty of loss that interrupts conversations where we assumed continuation… The way brilliance sometimes burns too bright, too fast. Not because anyone is to blame, but because the system demands more than bodies can sustain - The health toll. We don't talk enough about what this costs. My thoughts are with her family and all those who are feeling this loss.

Jo Mayson

My deepest sympathies to you. I never had the chance to meet or work with Emma, but it was clear how much light and care she brought to her role. I hope that what she gave continues to be felt at the University, and far beyond it.

Andy Wear, Faculty of Business and Economics

I acknowledge with gratitude the way in which Professor Emma Johnston AO devoted her considerable intellectual and leadership qualities to the University of Melbourne. From when she was President of the Student Union, to her appointment as Vice-Chancellor, I have observed her charisma, intelligence and dedication. I first learned about Professor Emma Johnston when participating in the inaugural Science & Technology Australia Superstars of STEM program in 2017. Superstars of STEM was created to support and highlight women working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in Australia. As STA President, Emma supported the establishment of Superstars of STEM. This program has been enormously important in building confidence and supporting the careers of many STEM professionals in Australia. Emma is a huge inspiration to us all with her passion for science and visibility within the sector. Thank you, Emma, for all you have done for science.

Although we did not know each other personally, the few interactions I had with Emma were impactful and reflected her inspirational leadership. I am deeply saddened by her loss, which will be felt across our University. I hope her positive influence continues to guide us into the future. Vale Emma Johnston

Isn't it amazing when you feel deeply moved or inspired by someone whom you may have not ever met in person, or had a direct 1-1 conversation with? This is how I will remember and honour Emma with the limited times I saw her address the University community. I was particularly impressed with her talk at the International Womens Day breakfast, inspiring leadership and vision for those of us identifying as such. I was also humbled by her willingness to answer my question about her pet dogs at an all staff meeting. It showed us that her human connection, despite the unimaginable responsibilities that her role would demand, were always very present. Vale Emma Johnston. Condolences to her family and friends.

Pru Burns

My deepest condolences to Emma's family and friends. It is profoundly sad that we have lost Emma at such a young age. Emma lived an exceptional and rich life, and has had lasting major impacts on multiple institutions across this country, and beyond, including our own university. Vale Professor Emma Johnston.
