Early Learning Centre in Abbotsford temporary closure

The University of Melbourne’s Early Learning Centre in Abbotsford will be closed until at least Monday 13 July after two confirmed COVID-19 cases at the centre.

The University was yesterday notified that a child who attended the centre on Tuesday 30 June and Thursday 2 July has tested positive for COVID-19.

This follows the case of a child who attended the centre on Monday 29 June, Tuesday 30 June and Wednesday 1 July and later tested positive for COVID-19.

Children and staff who attended on any of the above dates are being asked to quarantine at home for 14 days after the last exposure with a confirmed case or until the Department of Health and Human Services advises otherwise. Parents, or other people living with close contacts, do not have to quarantine.

Deep cleaning at University’s Early Learning Centre in Abbotsford after COVID-19 case

The University of Melbourne Early Learning Centre (ELC) in Abbotsford will be closed on (at least) Monday 6 July and Tuesday 7 July to allow for deep cleaning to be conducted after a child at the centre tested positive for COVID-19.

All families who had children attending the ELC when the child who tested positive was in attendance have been directly contacted. They have been advised to isolate their children until further advice is received from DHHS.

The health, safety and wellbeing of all children and staff at the ELC is our first priority and we apologise for the inconvenience.

Further information will be provided to parents on Tuesday afternoon about when the ELC will reopen.

Confirmed staff case of coronavirus (COVID-19)

The University of Melbourne has been advised that a staff member, who has recently returned from overseas, has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

The staff member has been in self-isolation and is recovering. We continue to offer our support.

Importantly, the staff member has not been on campus or had any in-person or face-to-face contact with the extended University community recently.

The University urges any members of our community who suspect that they may have COVID‑19 and are experiencing symptoms including fever, breathing difficulties, cough, sore throat or fatigue, please follow the latest advice from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), call the dedicated hotlines on 1800 675 398 (Victoria) or 1800 020 080 (national), OR call your GP and follow their advice.

Confirmed staff case

The University of Melbourne has been advised that a staff member, who is currently overseas, has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

The staff member has been in self-isolation and is recovering well. We continue to offer our support.

Importantly, the staff member, who has been overseas since mid-April, has not been on campus or had any in-person or face-to-face contact with the extended University community recently.

Confirmed student case

The University of Melbourne has been advised that a student, who is currently overseas, has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

The student has been in self-isolation and is recovering well and we continue to offer our support.

Importantly, the student has not been on campus or had any in-person or face-to-face contact with the extended University community recently.

Two confirmed student cases

The University of Melbourne has been advised this week that another two students have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

The two cases are not connected. The students are in self-isolation at home and are in good spirits and recovering.

Importantly, the students have not been on campus or had any in-person or face-to-face contact with the extended University community recently.

The University of Melbourne can confirm that we have been advised that another four students have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

The four students tested positive after recently returning from overseas and they are currently in self-isolation. The cases are not connected.

The University is in contact with the students and has offered them access to all University support services. We send them our very best wishes for a speedy recovery.

The two staff members tested positive after recently returning together from overseas and they are currently in self-isolation at home.

It is important to note that neither staff member has been on campus nor had further in-person or face-to-face contact with the extended University community since their return.

The student is the partner of another University of Melbourne student who had tested positive after recently returning home from overseas and who is currently in self-isolation at home.

It is important to note that neither student has been on campus nor had further in-person or face-to-face contact with the extended University community during this time.

The University has offered the student access to all University support services and sends them our very best wishes.

Students

The University of Melbourne can confirm that we have been advised that two of our students have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

Each of these students travelled separately and recently returned from the UK and went immediately into self-isolation as per the Australian Government’s guidelines. They have mild symptoms and are recovering at home. It is important to note that neither student has been on campus or had further in-person or face-to-face contact with the extended University community during this time.

The University has offered both students access to all University support services and sends them our very best wishes.

This staff member was in close contact with another staff member who tested positive for COVID-19 (the second case on campus). The University is in contact with the staff member directly to ensure that they are well supported. It is important to note that all identified close contacts of our second case have been in self-isolation and have not been on campus.

Contact tracing and additional cleaning have been undertaken to minimise any further risk of transmission in line with government advice. The building attended by this staff member has already undergone a deep sanitising clean as a result of the second case.

This staff member was in close contact with another staff member who tested positive for COVID-19 (the second case on campus). The University is in contact with the staff member directly to ensure that they are well supported. The staff member has mild symptoms and is being supported by their family at home.  As a precaution, they had been in self-isolation and were not on campus when the first symptoms appeared or in the 24 hours prior.

Contact tracing and additional cleaning have been undertaken to minimise any further risk of transmission in line with government advice. The building attended by this staff member has already undergone a deep sanitising clean as a result of the second case.

Subcontractor

We have also been advised that a subcontractor to Kane Construction working at the New Student Precinct (NSP) has tested positive for COVID-19. The subcontractor was on site on Wednesday 11 March and Thursday 12 March.

The NSP is managed by Kane Construction as principal contractor and they are responsible for site security, occupational health and safety. Kane have followed the appropriate steps following a confirmed case. We have been advised that the subcontractor had been overseas and started showing symptoms on the evening of the 12 March, and they have self-isolated since. There were no University staff or students regarded as close contacts in this case.

The worksite has been and remains secured from public access since before Wednesday 11 March. The affected areas of the site were cleaned and work on the site resumed on Tuesday 24 March.
