Notify your contacts

The following wording is provided to help you tell your contacts that you have COVID-19 and what they should do next.

In general, you should notify people you spent time with during your infectious period, which is the 48 hours before you:

  • noticed symptoms, or
  • tested positive (if you didn't have symptoms before testing positive)

It is important to tell your contacts you have tested positive so they monitor for symptoms, get tested and take any appropriate measures to look after themselves and others in their community.

The Victorian Government checklist for COVID contacts provides more information about the different types of COVID contacts listed below.

Sample message to notify your close contacts

Hi <NAME>,

I recently tested positive for COVID-19.

I am contacting you because I spent 4 or more hours with you in a household, care facility or accommodation setting while I was infectious.

Please monitor for symptoms and get tested if you have any. Please refer to the University's guidance for contacts for everything you need to do.

Sample message to notify your social contacts

(includes people you have been in contact with at work, school, university, childcare, events or social gatherings)

Hi <NAME>,

I recently tested positive for COVID-19.

I am contacting you because I spent time with you while I was infectious. This makes you a social contact.

Please monitor for symptoms and get tested if you have any. Please refer to the University's guidance for contacts for everything you need to do.

Sample message to notify your supervisors and employers

Hi <NAME>,

I recently tested positive for COVID-19 and am letting you know as recommended by the Department of Health.

I last attended the workplace on <DATE>, which <was/was not> during my infectious period.

In line with University recommendations, I will stay away from campus until <DATE>, please let me know if there is anything I need to do due to my absence from campus.

Sample message to notify your lecturers and subject coordinators
