Biography

An established interdisciplinary researcher and academic manager currently employed as Professor in Global Inequalities and Head of the Centre for Urban and Public Policy Research (CUPPR) at the University of Bristol, UK and as an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the School of Social & Political Sciences and the Centre for Cities at the University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Many years of experience working in UK higher education (holding a professorship since 2002), including as: a ProWarden (PVC); a Head of School; a Head of Department; a Research Centre Director; and as the Director of a large ESRC Research Programme. Experience of working across sociology, social policy and urban studies at: Bristol; Newcastle; Goldsmiths; York; Teesside; and Surrey. Has also held visiting appointments at: the University of Adelaide; ANU; and Flinders. A methodological pluralist, with over 150 research ‘outputs’ concerned with: housing and urban studies; digital cultures; social inequalities; higher education; the history of social research methods; and various other topics. Named on 48 successful research grants, 23 as principal investigator. Panel member for both the 2014 and 2021 UK REF exercise for Social Work & Social Policy. Currently living between Bristol, UK and Melbourne, Australia.
