Shanghai skyline Undergraduate students are now able to apply for a unique exchange scholarship program that puts them in charge of their international study adventure.

Westpac Bicentennial Foundation in partnership with the University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney have launched the inaugural Asian Exchange Scholarship program. Valued at $10,000, the program offers second year students from any discipline the opportunity to study for one semester at a leading Asian university.

Unlike other exchange programs, the Asian Exchange Scholarship lets students ‘choose their own adventure’ and tailor their experience to suit their own interests. Options include intensive language courses, internships and volunteering opportunities.

At a special event hosted by the University of Melbourne, Westpac Bicentennial Foundation CEO Susan Bannigan said: “We will need future leaders connected to the region, with a greater understanding of Asian culture, business and language. Asia-literacy will be critical to harness the enormous opportunities in our region.”

Professor Simon Evans, Pro-Vice Chancellor (International) at the University of Melbourne, said: “Traditionally, the top destinations for students have been the USA and Europe and while they still are very much places in which to broaden experience and knowledge, this program presents a unique opportunity for Asia to join them as a go-to destination.”

The Asian Exchange Scholarships are just one in a suite of scholarship opportunities that the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation plans to roll out over the coming years. Other areas will include technology and innovation, leadership and community internships. The focus is purely on higher education and the project marks the first time tertiary institutions have partnered with a major banking organsation. It coincides with Westpac’s 200th birthday in 2017 and the Foundation is committing to at least 100 scholarships each year for the foreseeable future.
