A legacy to change the future

John Northey Ashford was a mechanical engineer, a keen glider, and a man with a lifetime of interest in new technologies.

When it came to making his Will, John expressed this passion by choosing to leave a gift supporting the development of medical prostheses, a unique field where the expertise and capabilities from medicine, engineering and science work together to shape the future of healthcare.

John’s bequest will particularly support the Graeme Clarke Institute, where researchers are using augmented reality to evaluate and treat real-world injuries and disease, and assess the effectiveness of rehabilitation after major surgeries.

Led by Dr David Ackland, the team uses a whole-body, immersive virtual reality platform to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of implants and prosthetics.

There is enormous potential to develop joint replacements and prosthetic components tailored to the needs of each individual patient

Thanks to donors like John, this dream is one step closer to reality.
