Tom Tom Dahlenburg - Bachelor Of Fine Arts (Production)

For Tom Dahlenburg, one of his fondest memories while studying at the Victorian College of Arts (VCA) was the opportunity to travel to the World Stage Design conference in Taiwan.

Attending this conference not only exposed him to new ideas and trends, but also opened up a world of opportunities for him and his peers.

“This provided all performance technology students in my year level the opportunity to attend world-class lectures, workshops and discuss the future of technology in Performance Art as a whole.

“Not only have I worked with numerous Melbourne-based lighting designers whom I met at this conference since, but I’ve been able to build upon concepts shared by leading researchers and put these into practice in my own works.”

Throughout his time at the VCA, Tom complemented his studies working as an audio-visual designer and technician assisting community-based theatre companies and secondary schools.

“Alongside this, I worked at the National Gallery of Victoria in the multimedia department and at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. These workplaces allowed me to continue to build upon my current knowledge base and learn further skills working alongside specialists in the fields of Light, Audio and Visuals.”

Tom will be undertaking a job at the NGV as an AV Events Production Coordinator and plans to continue exploring the limits of technology in the performing arts and multimedia-based installations.

“I would like to investigate how this can in turn create a sensory experience like no other for the participant or viewer.”

His advice to students: “Take every opportunity that is available to develop your practice and do not be afraid to seek advice from fellow students. Often you will find that your peers have a wealth of knowledge which can they share at a moment’s notice.”
